As a studio owner, keeping your clients motivated during the long, cold winter months is always a big challenge, let alone during a pandemic. However, it isn’t impossible. Whether you’re able to see your clients in-person or plan to train them virtually, we’ve rounded up the top 6 ways you can get them excited to train indoors. If you haven’t offered at-home, virtual training before, don’t stress; these ideas are easy to quickly implement in time for the chillier temperatures ahead. Keep reading to learn more:

  1. Begin an Accountability Challenge

Help your clients stay on top of their workouts by offering an accountability challenge. You can track their progress either somewhere in your studio or on social media, and offer a prize to individuals who meet their goals. It can be as simple as walking 10,000 steps a day or doing something active (i.e. ten squats) every hour. Make sure to give shoutouts to members who are meeting their goals—after all, who doesn’t enjoy the occasional pat on the back? Starting a private Facebook group can also be a great way to allow your clients to stay connected with one another and engaged in the challenge.

  1. Donate to Favorite Charities

Similar to the accountability challenge idea above, you can make a donation to a non-profit of your client’s choice if they meet a certain goal, such as taking a class every day for a week. Your clients will be much less likely to sleep in and skip a workout if they feel like they’re letting down a good cause. This can either be offered as an individual challenge or a group challenge.

  1. Start a Rewards Program

Whether you’re discounting class packages or memberships, or offering a free studio trial, providing your customers with additional value is one way to get them engaged and committed to working out. You may also want to consider combining a rewards program with retail sales. For example, you could offer points for every dollar spent on retail that can then be used on classes or other retail purchases. Consider offering discounts on branded gear. Your clients will love their new workout apparel, plus they’ll be spreading the word about your studio.

  1. Embrace the Holiday Spirit

It’s no surprise that winter can really put a damper on the motivation to workout and eat well. It’s cold, it’s dark, and there’s always a plethora of holiday desserts to snack on. Rather than trying to make working out seem more fun than staying cozy by a fire with a glass of eggnog (impossible), consider infusing your classes with some holiday cheer. Themed social media posts and classes (complete with holiday music playlists), i.e. Santa strength training can help make it more fun to maintain a workout routine.

  1. Offer Master Classes/Workshops

Help your audience stay inspired to get in shape by offering in-person or online master classes or workshops with crowd favorite instructors. If the same workout routine is feeling stale, learning a new routine can help you feel inspired and ready to get back on track. If you find that these classes or workshops are popular, you may want to consider having them as a more regular part of your cold-weather offerings.

  1. Keep in Touch

Have a way of reaching out and checking in with your customers, whether that be email, text, DM, or a phone call. Let them know about new classes or promotions that you’re offering, and see how they’re doing. Small personal touches like this can go a long way in fostering a sense of community and belonging. You could also consider offering one-on-one coaching, which could be anything from having a brief chat to help your clients establish fitness goals unique to their needs or even just guiding them through creating a workout schedule they’ll be able to stick with throughout the winter season.

While keeping your clients excited about workouts sans outdoor classes is no small task, these tips should hopefully help you keep your attendance up and your studio morale high. Just remember: these dark, freezing days won’t last forever, and spring will be here before you know it. Stay positive, and good luck with your indoor and virtual offerings!
